Kellerei Kaltern (Caldaro, Alto Adige)

Kellerei Kaltern is a modern co-operative facility in the Alto Adige, with 410 members. The winery is highly regarded as one of the best in the region and focuses on individuality and character of single sites. Commitment to quality is the main focus of the growers.

Pinot Grigio Söll 2006

The Söll is a single site 12 year old vineyard, from a SE facing slope, 450 m above sea level. The site is relatively warm and breezy, which aids in preventing any botrytis. Soil is primarily loam, with weathered chalk. In making the wine, grapes are whole bunch pressed, with slow temperature controlled ferment, and 6 months on lees. 20% of the wine is barrel fermented. Residual sugar 3 g / L.

Pinot Bianco 2005 / 2006

The grapes for this wine are sourced from a steep easterly facing vineyard, 450 – 600m above sea level overlooking the town of Kaltern. Soils are rich with loam, chalk, gravel and sand. Vines are up to 30 years old. The grapes are whole bunch pressed, fermented in stainless steel and spend 4 months on lees. Residual sugar, 2.5g/L

Pinot Bianco Vial 2006

Sauvignon Blanc Castel Giovanelli 2005

Chardonnay Castel Giovanelli 2005

Gewürztraminer Campaner 2006

Pinot Nero Saltnerhof 2005

Saltnerhof is a single site 20 year old vineyard, on an east facing slope, 450 – 550m above sea level. Soils are a mix of loam, chalk, gravel and sand. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel, with 2 weeks skin maceration followed by 8 months in both barrels and old large oak casks.

Lagrein Spigel 2005 2 bicchieri Gambero Rosso 2007

Spigel is a site North west of Lake Kaltern, on gently sloping S-SE facing slopes 260m above sea level. This is a newer site, the vines being 10 years old. The grapes are fermented on their skins, with 3 weeks maceration before going through malo-lactic fermentation in barriques. The wine spends 16 months in barrique (1/3new oak) and given a light filtration before bottling. Full bodied style, with violets, blackberries, bramble, lingering spice and velvety texture.
