La Querce (Colli Fiorentino,
Tuscany) La Querce is a small vineyard located just outside of Florence, in the hills of Impruneta. Owned by the Marchi family since 1962, it has in recent years been revitalised due to Massimo Marchi enlisting the help of consultant Massimo Ferretti and winemaker Alberto Antonini. Currently there are 8 hectares under vine with traditional grape varieties of the region planted on south facing slopes. The results have been amazing with the Sorrettole winning the price /quality trophy 3 years in a row in the Gambero Rosso.
A traditional style of Chianti, with a blend of Sangiovese, Cannaiolo and Trebbiano. Vinified in stainless steel.
La Querce DOCG 2 bicchieri rosso , Gambero Rosso 2007/2008 94 points Wine Spectator 2007 90% Sangiovese, 10% Colorino. The Top wine of this estate, dark morello cherry, graphite and subtle vanilla tones, inky black in colour. At this stage very juicy, with rich ripe fruit and a very fine tannic finish. A big wine that made it into the final of the awards.
La Querce "Torretta"
Poggio al Sole (Tavarnelle Val di
Pesa, Tuscany) Poggio al Sole, meaning ‘sun-facing hill’ in Italian, is situated on 37 acres of a south-facing ridge in Tavernelle, which is in the heart of Tuscany, between Florence and Siena. The Vineyard was taken over in the 1990s by The Davazs’, a Swiss family who come from a long tradition of winemaking. Since the son Johannes Davaz took over, he's transformed Poggio al Sole into a state-of-the-art winery with modern equipment and a temperature-controlled wine cellar. The vines are planted at 320-480 metres above sea level. Cropping levels are limited to between 400-600 grams of grapes per square metre. Poggio al Sole was known for its excellent Chianti Classico, and now also has an excellent Bordeaux Blend and Syrah.Their wines typically are awarded 2 to 3 Bicchieri in Gamberro Rosso each year.
Trittico (Sangiovese / Merlot)
Chianti Classico Rich and juicy with great lifted cherry fruit, clasic firm but fine tannins. Fantastic drinking now ….
Chianti Classico Casasilia 2 bicchieri Gambero Rosso 08 Very intense super ripe morello cherry fruit, spice and tobacco with well integrated tannins. With all this richness the wine manages to stay elegant and light.
Seraselva Merlot-Cabernet IGT Very concentrated nose, cassis
& cedar notes but clearly a Tuscan wine with earth and firm
tannins. A very classy wine with great ageing potential
Poggio Scalette (Greve in Chianti,
Toscana) The slopes of the Greve Valley are indisputably one of Italy's most ideal locations for the cultivation of vineyards. The combination of exposure and soil composition contribute to the excellent quality of the wines. Poggio Scalette takes its name from the landscape which is characterised by dry stone walls that support the terraces on which the vineyards and olive groves are planted. Another fact is that these vines, more than 90 years old, are a rare example of the original clone of the famous “Sangiovese di Lamole” varietal in the Chianti Classico area.
Il Carbonaione 3 bicchieri rosso, Gambero Rosso 2007 2 bicchieri rosso, Gambero Rosso 2008 From legendary winemaker Vittorio Fiore, a wine that represents the highest expression of the Sangiovese: supple, rich, dense and long lived… a benchmark Supertuscan! It is the culmination of knowledge and experience and therefore an important message of quality.
Casanova di Neri
(Montalcino, Toscana) One of the rising stars of Montalcino, this estate
comprises of 48 ha. in 4 areas within the region: Pietradonice in
Castelnuovo dell’Abate; Cetine in San Angelo in Colle; Cerretalto and
Fiesole. The oldest vines were planted in 1971 and in 2005 a brand new
gravity fed winery was built. Their commitment to the region and producing
both traditional and more modern style wines is paying off with fantastic
press endorsements and global demand for their wines. Made from a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino, grown in the region of Sant' Antimo, which lies just south of Brunello. The Sangiovese is aged in large oak casks, whereas the Colorino is aged in smaller barrels
100% Brunello, aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 36 months. The classic wine from this Estate. Very fragrant dark cherry fruit, hint of spice. Very well integrated tannins. Amazing value!!
Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 2004 A worthy successor to the Best Wine in the World (01' Vintage)!! The often criticised 2003 Vintage turns out this wonderful fresh, but ripe wine. Dark cherry fruit with underlying minerality (graphite/slate) exotic spice and herbs. On the palate it reveals layer upon layer of fruit and savoury secondary characters. Firm but fine grained tannis. Very approachable now but has enormous potential for long term cellaring.
96 points Wine Spectator JS: "Intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and black cherry. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a chewy finish. Has impressive structure for the vintage. Very well-made. Best after 2011." Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto
Fontaleoni (San Gimignano, Toscana) Azienda Agricola Fontaleoni is a small estate whose vineyards are located at 200 meters above sea level - an ideal altitude for growing the Vernaccia varietal. The vineyard was established in 1959. The vinyard practices organic viticulture, with minimal organic fertilisers used, and low dose of So2 added to the wines. Their specialty is Vernaccia, a variety whose ebullience was duly noted by Michelangelo who with a perceptive poetic flight described it as a wine that "kisses, bites, stings and caresses", perfectly capturing its delicate yet sinewy character
Vernaccia di San Gimignano Vernaccia di San Gimignano was the first DOC wine to be declared in Itally in 1966!! Made from 100% estate grown
Vernaccia, the wine has a soft yellow glow. It has a clean, aromatic nose,
with almond blossom, citrus and white fruits. Low yields, careful harvest
and pressing of this fragile grape ensure a bright crisp style. It has an
impressive weigth to the palate - a long, lovely weight of fruit, mineral, and almond that persists on the palate.
A great Italian summer drink and excellent food wine The Vernaccia is from a single vineyard and cropped at scrupulously low yields. A blend of 90% Vernaccia with the remaining part made up of Chardonnay. It shows more weight and texture, gained from extra time on lees and has wonderful persistence and length
Montevertine (Radda, Toscana) MONTEVERTINE lies within the heart of the Chianti hills, in the community of Radda at an altitude of 425m above sea level. Documents show that the site has been dwelled since the 11th century. In 1967, Sergio Manetti, at that time a manufacturer of steel products, bought Montevertine as a holiday house. He restored the house and returned it to its original dwelling destination, and right from the beginning, he planted two hectares of wine and he set up a small cellar. The idea was to produce some wine for friends and customers. The wine has had Cult Status in Italy since 1971.
Pergole Torte 100% Sangiovese; 13% alcohol. Deep, full red. Complex, gorgeous nose melds ripe red cherry, tobacco, iron, cinnamon and a floral element. Suave and bright, but fatter and deeper than the Montevertine, with perfectly integrated acidity to buffer its voluptuous texture and captivating flavors of ripe red cherry, spicy plum, liquorice and underbrush. Finishes broad, with compellingly mouthcoating tannins and outstanding length. A great wine and another example of the incredible heights sangiovese can achieve in the right hands and in the right terroirs, such as Radda, where Montevertine is located. IAN d'AGATA 97points
Montevertine A mainly sangiovese wine with small amounts of canaiolo nero and colorino; 13% alcohol) Bright red. Wonderfully floral, pure aromas of sour red cherry, cranberry and violet. Bright and minerally on entry, then tight and youthfully acidic in the middle, with hints of marzipan, fresh red berries and citrus fruits. Boasts an exhilarating sugar/acid balance and a firm tannic spine, finishing juicy and bright, with a crunchy texture and noteworthy precision. This exceptional wine explodes with perfume and flavour. Even better than the great 2001, this is a true monument to the greatness that can be achieved by sangiovese blended with canaiolo nero IAN d'AGATA 93points
