Sottimano (Neive, Piemonte)

The Sottimano winery was founded by Maggiore Sottimano in 1974. Now in the hands of father and son, Rino and Andrea Sottimano, this estate is producing outstanding wines. Starting with a cellar and vineyard in The Cotta area, the estate has now grown to 13 hectares, with vineyard sites throughout Barbaresco - in Currá, Fausoni, Pajoré and Basarin. As of 1990, the vineyards are fully organic. Particular attention is paid to the care in the vineyards, focus on low yields to produce wines with great structure and ageability.Minimum handling is used in their making, using only natural yeasts. Wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

Dolcetto d’Alba Bric del Salto 2006

The Dolcetto is produced from 3 vineyard sites in Neive: Cottá, Basarin and Currá. Average vine age is 35 years old. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel using wild yeasts followed by 8 months in stainless steel tanks.
This is a lovely soft style, with a bright fruit driven palate, offering florals, anise and lingering finish with food friendly acidity.

Nebbiolo Langhe Basarin 2005

Full and rich, wonderful expressive Nebbiolo from a younger Barbaresco Vinyard ,12 months in barrel, elegant with very fine grained tannins.

Barbaresco Curra DOCG 2004

Dark brooding colour, tight and intense very clear focused black fruit, a modern classic with a long finish….

Barbaresco Cotta DOCG 2004

Exotic spice and deep rich colour, hints of tar and wild roses, morello cherries and wild forrest berries. With all the complexity, the wine manages to stay light elegant and focused.

Barbaresco Cottá DOCG 2003 2 bicchieri, Gambero Rosso 2007

Cotta is a 2.5 ha. site near Neive. The vines are 45 years old, grown on South-West facing slopes. Grapes are picked at 4.5 tonnes per ha. and fermented in French barrels, using only wild yeasts. The wine spends around 20 months in a mix of 25% new French barrels and 75 % up to 4 year old French barrels.

The wine has a lovely rich colour. On the nose it offers notes of red and black fruits. On the palate, the wine combines power and finesse, with layers of ripe fruit, bitter cherry, char and earth. the wine disguises the heat of the vintage well, delivering powerful structure with bold tannins.
