Balnaves of Coonawarra (Coonawarra, South Australia)

Balnaves is a family owned vineyard in Coonawarra which has consistently made excellent wines and has been rewarded in the past 18 months with some great recognition of its commitment to the region with well deserved press for their wines. The Balnaves family was thrilled to be named Winery of the Year in the 2008 James Holiday Australian Wine Companion

Chardonnay

Handpicked fruit from 2 vinyard sites. Whole bunch pressed juice was barrel fermented on solids in new and one year old barriques. Malo-lactic fermentation was allowed to proceed on 50% of the wine. Lees contact for eleven months preceded bottling

The Blend (Cabernet and Merlot) ( 457 163 )

The Blend comprises primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (59.2%) and Merlot (39.3%). Maturation was for 18 months in new (32%) and second fill (68%) tight grain French oak from St Martin, Taransaud and Saury Cooperages, prior to fining and bottling in Novermber.

Deep red in colour, the nose is dense with ripe dark blackberry and blueberry fruit, integrated vanillin oak and a perfumed note of violets. The palate is medium-bodied and elegant with a firm tannin finish

Cabernet Merlot

Cabernet Sauvignon (84.5%) from their Avery block and Merlot (15.5%) from their Avery, Rise and Silage vineyards were blended and matured for 20 months in tight grain French oak (46% new) before fining and bottling in March under Procork.

A lifted nose of perfumed cassis fruit, complex mineral, liquorice fruit and appealing sweetness. The palate is solid and round with balanced fruit and fine tannins.

Cabernet Savignon

The Tally Reserve (Cabernet Sauvignon)

The Tally has a deep red-purple tinge. This is a huge wine, big rich ripe fruit, liquorice and anise notes, spice complex and dense. The palate is big and rich, full-bodied ripe fruit with solid tannins and structure. The Tannins need time to soften as this wine has less long maceration than normal

Shiraz

Deep red colour. It has a big nose intense dark berry fruit blackberries and blackberry liqueur characters with pepper and vanillin French oak, clean and pure, with a good length and intense pepper finish
